How Industrial Facilities Can Save Green While Going Green

Ndustrial provides energy intelligence case studies at Electrify NC Event

Electrifying industrial facilities is a big undertaking, but there are easy steps operations can take to begin their electrification journey. Ndustrial provided examples at the Electrify NC event, hosted by the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation.

Ndustrial CEO Jason Massey spoke about how industrial operations are creating a culture of energy intelligence. One simple but powerful way is by moving energy expenditure from an operating expense to a Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). Through submetering and real-time Energy Intensity monitoring, this approach drives accountability for energy performance down to the operator level rather than being a write-off that is simply accepted as a cost of doing business.

Electrifying new loads also provides a perfect opportunity to create a culture of energy intelligence. One example in the food industry is the electrification of Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs). TRUs keep food cold while in transit and during loading and unloading. Driven by California regulations, TRUs are quickly transitioning from diesel fuel to electric “shore power” at the loading dock. This provides facilities a unique opportunity to help decarbonize the supply chain while earning new revenue.

Central to this effort is an intelligent orchestration layer that can integrate production data, facility energy data, and price signals from electricity markets. Ndustrial’s Nsight™ Energy Intensity Platform enables facilities to consider these factors holistically and make smarter energy decisions in real time while providing much-needed load flexibility to grid operators.

“There are a lot of questions about eTRUs,” said Massey. “How will sites manage the new load? Can they charge truck owners for it? Can anyone claim carbon credits?” He detailed the drivers of change and the technology needed to manage it.
